Alberta independence referendum puts Canada’s unity to the test
Voters in Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta are taking part in a historic referendum that could pave the way for a formal process towards independence.
Supporters of separation argue that Alberta’s vast energy resources subsidise other parts of Canada while federal policies restrict the province’s economic potential.
Opponents warn that the movement threatens national unity and accuse US Republican-linked political figures of helping amplify separatist campaigns.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Albertans to vote against separation, warning that Canada’s future is at stake.
More than one million people have already cast ballots in advance voting, while recent opinion polls suggest nearly 70 percent of Albertans favour remaining in Canada.
However, campaigners on both sides say voter turnout could determine the outcome.
The referendum would initiate a process towards a second, binding vote rather than immediately grant Alberta independence.
